NIKI Luftfahrt GmbH was created from Aero Lloyd Austria GmbH, in which Niki Lauda had acquired a majority share in November 2003. In January 2004 airberlin and NIKI created the first European low-fare alliance. In February 2010 airberlin increased its holding in NIKI from 24 to 49.9 per cent. The company’s base airport is Vienna and it serves destinations not only in Austria, but many other places in Europe. In November 2007 airberlin acquired a 49 per cent stake in Belair Airlines AG from the previous sole proprietor, Hotelplan, and assumed economic responsibility for the Swiss airline. In October 2009 a trust became the new owner of a 51 per cent stake in Belair, with airberlin being granted an option to purchase this share. Belair’s base airport is Zurich and the airline operates services to holiday destinations around the Mediterranean, in Egypt, the Canary Islands and major German cities.irberlin has received an award from "Capital", the Spanish magazine, for its services to tourism and the economy in Majorca. This is the first year that the business magazine awarded the "Palma de Mallorca" prize to companies and individuals from the world of business, politics and culture, who helped to publicise the name of “Palma de Mallorca” in a positive light.
